Flock ALPR Cameras: Surveillance & Privacy Concerns #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 weeks ago

The short version: A quick #shorts explainer from STS Technologies LLC on Flock ALPR privacy risks doubles as a pitch for its own 'FlockYou' awareness gadget, but the underlying warning about plate-reader surveillance is worth hearing.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: STS Technologies LLC is using the short-form format to put ALPR surveillance in front of an audience that might otherwise never think about the camera on the pole at the end of their street. That's useful, because Flock Safety's pitch to police departments — "just a few cameras, just for stolen cars" — rarely gets the scrutiny it deserves once the footage starts feeding a nationwide, searchable database of everyone's movements.

We'd note the obvious: this is also a product video. The company is selling a "FlockYou" device alongside the awareness message, so treat the specifics as marketing copy rather than investigative reporting. That doesn't make the core concern less real — plate readers logging your location dozens of times a day, shared across agencies with little oversight, is a legitimate privacy problem whether or not you buy anyone's gadget to deal with it.

If this clip got you wondering what's actually watching your plate, skip the merch and go look for yourself. Check our camera map to see what's deployed near you, and if you want to push back through public records requests or city council meetings, our take-action page walks through how.
