License Plate Readers Keep You Safe!

The Real Talk Report · 2 months ago

The short version: The Real Talk Report pitches ALPRs as a safety slam dunk, but the title alone glosses over the surveillance tradeoffs that come with every scan.

Our Take

The Real Talk Report frames license plate readers as a simple safety win, which is exactly the pitch Flock Safety and its law enforcement partners have been selling to city councils for years. It's a tidy narrative — cameras catch bad guys, everyone else goes about their day. What that framing leaves out is the part where every plate, on every car, gets logged, timestamped, and stored whether or not anyone's suspected of anything. That's not a safety feature, that's a tracking system with a friendly name.

We don't doubt these networks can help solve specific cases. But "keeps you safe" is doing a lot of work to paper over questions about retention windows, who gets access to the data, how it's shared across agencies and states, and what happens when the system is wrong or misused. Mass surveillance infrastructure doesn't need to be evil to be dangerous — it just needs to exist, quietly building a record of where you've been, and that record outlives whatever crime it was supposedly installed to stop.

Credit to The Real Talk Report for putting the topic in front of more eyes; we just think the safety framing deserves more scrutiny than a title can carry. If you want to see how dense this coverage actually is where you live, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just watch this play out, our take-action page has concrete steps.
