Cops Find STOLEN Car With Fake Licenseplate! | Police Interceptors FULL EPISODE

Police Interceptors · 5 months ago

The short version: A British police-chase show nabs a stolen car on fake plates, but the episode inadvertently shows why plate-reading tech can't be the silver bullet it's sold as.

Our Take

"Police Interceptors" is pure reality-TV entertainment, not a Flock Safety ad, but this episode lands right in our lane. Shaun and Grant catch a stolen car running a cloned or fake plate — exactly the kind of case ALPR vendors love to cite when pitching blanket camera networks to city councils. Credit to the Police Interceptors crew for an entertaining catch, but the subtext is worth unpacking.

Here's the problem: fake and cloned plates are a known blind spot for automated license plate readers. A camera reading a fraudulent tag can't tell you who's actually driving, it just matches characters against a database. Meanwhile, that same camera is logging every real, innocent plate that passes by, building location histories on people who've done nothing wrong. The tech that struggles to catch the bad actor is simultaneously the most effective tool ever built for watching everyone else.

That's the trade we're asked to accept: dragnet surveillance sold on anecdotes like this one, while the actual criminals adapt around it. If you want to see how far this network has spread in your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just watch it happen, head to our take-action page.
