Flock cameras are growing in popularity: LPD responds to why they are beneficial

Everything Lubbock · 2 months ago

The short version: Lubbock police tout Flock ALPRs as a public-safety win, but Everything Lubbock's segment skips the hard questions about data sharing, retention, and oversight.

Our Take

Local news segments like this one from Everything Lubbock follow a familiar script: a police department rolls out Flock Safety cameras, a spokesperson says they help solve crimes, and the story moves on. What's missing is the part that actually matters to the public — who else gets access to the millions of plate scans Lubbock PD is now generating, how long that data sits in a database, and whether any independent body is checking that the system isn't being misused for immigration sweeps, reproductive-rights investigations, or just plain fishing expeditions.

"Beneficial" is doing a lot of work in that headline. Sure, a camera that photographs every car on a street can help close a case. It can also build a rolling log of everywhere you drive, shared across a network of agencies with wildly different rules about who gets to look. Local TV rarely asks Flock or the department to show the audit logs, the retention policy, or the list of outside agencies with query access — and until reporters start asking those questions, residents are only getting the company's talking points repackaged as local coverage.

Credit to Everything Lubbock for at least putting the topic in front of viewers. If you want to see whether Flock has already landed in your neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not take the department's word for it, our take-action page has steps for pushing your city council toward real transparency and public votes before these systems expand further.
