Will Tucson build a panopticon? #LPR #Flock #Arizona

Insight Arizona Podcast · 2 months ago

The short version: Insight Arizona Podcast asks if Tucson is about to wire itself into a license-plate panopticon — and who gets to peek at the data, including ICE.

Our Take

The Insight Arizona Podcast asks the question every city council should be asking before it signs a Flock Safety contract: once you build a database of everyone's movements, who eventually gets to use it? Tucson isn't unique here — it's the same story playing out in hundreds of towns that quietly approve 'a few cameras for stolen cars' and end up with a searchable log of daily life for every driver in the county.

What makes this video worth a watch is its focus on mission creep toward immigration enforcement. Flock's own marketing insists local police control access, but audits nationwide have already shown out-of-state and federal queries slipping through, including from agencies with ICE ties. For a border state city with a large immigrant population, that's not a hypothetical risk — it's the whole ballgame. A network sold as protecting neighborhoods can just as easily become a tool for hunting down people based on where they park or who they visit.

Credit to Insight Arizona for pushing this into public view before the cameras go up rather than after. If you want to see whether Flock or similar ALPR systems are already watching your streets, check our camera map, and if Tucson or your own city is debating a contract, our take-action guide has the questions to bring to that council meeting.
