Santee weighs license plate reader pilot program

ABC 10 News · 4 months ago

The short version: Santee is the latest city flirting with Flock-style ALPRs, and ABC 10's segment shows the same tired 'crime-fighting tool' pitch with little scrutiny of the surveillance tradeoffs.

Our Take

Another week, another city council getting the sales pitch. ABC 10 News reports Santee is weighing a license plate reader pilot program, and if the playbook sounds familiar, that's because it is. Vendors show up with crime statistics and promises of 'targeted' use, city leaders nod along, and the actual conversation about who gets access to this data, how long it's retained, and what happens when it's inevitably shared with federal agencies or sold to data brokers gets skipped entirely.

Credit to ABC 10 for at least putting 'controversial' in the frame, but a local news segment rarely has time to unpack what a 'pilot program' really means. These programs almost never stay small. They expand, the cameras multiply, and the data trail every driver leaves behind grows with it. Santee residents should be asking hard questions now, before the contracts are signed and the cameras are bolted to light poles, not after.
