Flock Cameras and Hotels

ThisBrockLife · 2 weeks ago

The short version: ThisBrockLife spotlights Flock cameras popping up at hotels, raising fresh questions about who's tracking travelers and why.

Our Take

Credit to ThisBrockLife for pointing the camera (so to speak) at an angle most of us haven't considered: Flock Safety units showing up on hotel properties. We don't know the specifics of this particular installation, but the pattern fits what we've documented across the country — ALPR hardware creeping into private commercial lots, often with little signage and even less public input, feeding plate data into networks that police departments can query.

Hotels are a logical next frontier for this kind of surveillance creep. Parking lots are semi-private spaces where guests reasonably expect some anonymity, yet a camera at the entrance can log every vehicle that comes and goes, timestamp it, and route it into a searchable database that outlives your stay by months. Multiply that across business trips, family vacations, and visits nobody else needs to know about, and you get a detailed travel history assembled without a warrant or even a conversation with guests.

If you're curious whether a hotel, gas station, or your own street has one of these cameras watching, check our camera map to see what's already been documented nearby, and if you want to push back on this kind of quiet expansion, our take-action page has concrete steps for getting involved locally.
