Flock AI Cameras, Nation Wide Mass Surveillance, & The Death of Public Public Privacy

Beyond Expectation Podcast · 3 months ago

The short version: Brett and Eduardo's studio conversation on Flock's ALPR network adds mainstream podcast reach to a debate that's usually confined to activists and local council meetings.

Our Take

Credit to the Beyond Expectation Podcast for putting Flock Safety in front of a general audience instead of letting this stay a niche activist concern. That's exactly the problem with how this technology has spread: it got bolted onto thousands of intersections and neighborhood entrances through quiet council votes and HOA contracts, while most residents had no idea a private company was building a searchable, nationwide log of where their car goes. A podcast framing this as "the death of public privacy" isn't hyperbole, it's a fair description of what happens when every trip to a pharmacy, church, protest, or divorce attorney's office becomes a permanent record accessible to hundreds of agencies with a login.

The corporate data-sharing angle Brett and Eduardo dig into is the part that deserves more daylight. Flock isn't just a camera vendor, it's the operator of a network where one department's plate reads can be queried by cops in another state, no warrant required, because courts still treat your location history on public roads as fair game. That legal gap is exactly why local fights over these contracts matter so much, and why "it helps solve crimes" can't be the end of the conversation. A tool that works by surveilling everyone, including the overwhelming majority of people never suspected of anything, is a different animal than a tool that targets suspects.
