There are alternatives to today's AI problems

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 3 months ago

The short version: A mass-surveillance watchdog channel argues better tech choices exist beyond today's AI defaults — a reminder that ALPR dragnets aren't inevitable either.

Our Take

This video comes from a channel that's spent 400-plus uploads tracking the slow creep of digital ID, CBDCs, and surveillance infrastructure in the UK and US. The core argument — that we're not locked into the current trajectory of AI-driven systems, that alternatives exist if we demand them — maps directly onto the fight over automated license plate readers. Flock Safety and similar vendors love to frame ALPR networks as inevitable, a 'smart city' upgrade nobody can opt out of. They're not. Cities adopt these contracts through votes, budgets, and public comment periods, all of which can be reversed.

The broader point worth sitting with: once a surveillance system is built — whether it's an AI chatbot trained on your data or a camera logging your plate every time you drive to work — the people running it rarely volunteer to scale it back. That's why the alternative has to be pushed from outside, by residents who show up to council meetings, file records requests, and map what's already been installed in their own neighborhoods.

We don't know this channel's full catalog or agree with every claim it makes, but the instinct to question default tech narratives is the right one. If you want to see what that looks like applied specifically to license plate cameras, check our camera map and our take-action guide for pushing back where you live.
