Flock cameras and how we're being watched

Of Dark Matters Podcast · 2 weeks ago

The short version: A podcast deep-dive into Flock's ALPR network reminds us that 'just a license plate camera' quietly maps where every driver goes.

Our Take

The Of Dark Matters Podcast is doing something valuable here: slowing down and asking the basic question most communities never get to vote on — who's watching, and why. Flock Safety likes to frame its cameras as a narrow tool for catching stolen cars and Amber Alerts, but the podcast's framing of 'how we're being watched' gets at the real issue. These systems don't just catch bad guys; they log every plate, every time, building a searchable travel history on anyone who drives past one, guilty or not.

That's the part local city councils rarely interrogate before signing a Flock contract: the data doesn't stay local, retention policies are vague, and access can be shared with other agencies far beyond the jurisdiction that installed the camera. A podcast putting this in front of a general audience matters because most people genuinely don't know a camera is on their street, let alone how long their movements are stored or who can query them.

We don't know this network until we map it. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your routes, and if you want to push back on a deployment near you, our take-action page has the tools to start that fight at the local level.
