Interview: Dorchester County sheriff discusses Flock use, privacy responsibility

ABC News 4 · 1 month ago

The short version: A Dorchester County sheriff touts Flock cameras as a public-safety win, but ABC News 4's interview glosses over who actually audits the access logs.

Our Take

ABC News 4 sat down with Dorchester County Sheriff Sam Richardson to let him make the case for Flock Safety's license plate readers in his jurisdiction. That's useful footage, but interviews like this almost always follow the same script: a local official praises the tech for solving cases, while the harder questions about retention windows, data sharing with other agencies, and who's actually reviewing search logs get a soft pass. "Privacy responsibility" sounds reassuring in a soundbite, but it's a policy claim, not a policy — and policies are only as good as the audits that enforce them.

The reality is that once a county plugs into Flock's network, plate scans don't stay local. They can flow into a national lookup system shared across thousands of agencies, with federal partners increasingly in the mix. A sheriff's personal assurance about his department's intentions doesn't tell you anything about how that data gets used three jurisdictions over, or what happens when ICE or a private investigator comes asking. Residents deserve more than a sheriff's word — they deserve public audit logs, retention caps, and a city council vote before cameras go up, not after.

Credit to ABC News 4 and reporter for getting the sheriff on record — these interviews are worth watching critically.
