AI: Are We Too Reliant? We Can't Give It Up! #shorts

New News Shorts · 2 weeks ago

The short version: A short from New News Shorts nails the real paradox: we rage about AI surveillance while cities quietly bankroll Flock cameras on every corner.

Our Take

Credit to New News Shorts for naming the contradiction plainly: we scroll past headlines about AI surveillance with a shudder, then drive past a Flock Safety camera bolted to a stop sign and barely notice. That's not an accident. Flock markets itself as convenience and 'community safety,' not surveillance infrastructure — even though it's quietly building a nationwide database of where your car has been, who you visited, and when.

The paradox the video points to is real, but it undersells how deliberate it is. ALPR vendors don't ask for public buy-in on mass tracking; they get a police chief or city council to approve 'a few cameras for stolen vehicles,' and the network grows from there, city by city, county by county, with almost no public debate about retention windows, data sharing, or who else gets to query the system. Convenience is the Trojan horse.

If this short got you thinking about how normalized this has become in your own town, don't stop at thinking. Check our map to see how many Flock cameras are already running near you, and head to take-action for concrete steps to push back before the network gets any bigger.
