Texas is pausing state funding for Flock cameras

Chron · 2 months ago

The short version: Even a red-state governor who loves 'tough on crime' branding is hitting pause on Flock funding once the misuse reports and price tag became impossible to ignore.

Our Take

Credit to Chron for getting this on record: Gov. Greg Abbott ordering state agencies to halt funding for Flock's license plate readers isn't a small thing. This is a Republican governor in a law-and-order state acknowledging what we've been saying for a long time — these networks get built first and questioned never, until the misuse stories pile up too high to ignore. At least $30 million in state grants went into this system before anyone in power stopped to ask who's actually looking at the data and why.

What's notable here isn't that Texas suddenly discovered privacy as a value. It's that the math stopped working politically. When local cops start using a 'public safety' tool to run plates for out-of-state exes, immigration status fishing expeditions, or just because they're curious, the backlash reaches state capitals fast. Abbott pausing funding doesn't mean the cameras come down — it means the money spigot from Austin closes while local agencies and cities figure out their own arrangements, which they'll likely keep doing quietly.

This is exactly why tracking where these cameras actually are matters, funding freeze or not. Texas municipalities aren't required to stop deploying Flock systems just because the state stopped subsidizing them. Check our camera map to see what's already up in your area, and if you want to push back on a specific deployment, our take-action page has the tools to start.
