The short version: A Mansfield, Ohio dispatcher was reportedly fired for misusing Flock Safety ALPR access, underscoring how easily these databases can be abused from the inside.

Our Take

Credit to Joe & Molly for flagging this one — a Mansfield, Ohio 911 dispatcher allegedly used Flock camera access for reasons that had nothing to do with public safety, and got fired for it. Flock and police departments love to tout these cases as proof the system 'works' because the misuse got caught. We'd argue it proves something else: that the system is only as trustworthy as the person sitting at the terminal, and audit logs only matter if someone's actually reviewing them.

Every Flock deployment comes with the same sales pitch — searchable by case number, logged, restricted to legitimate investigations. But a dispatcher pulling plate data for personal reasons isn't a hypothetical, it's a pattern we keep seeing pop up across the country. The tech doesn't just track criminals; it tracks exes, neighbors, coworkers, anyone whose plate someone with a login decides to look up. One firing doesn't tell us how many searches never get flagged, or how many departments even bother auditing.

This is why transparency can't stop at 'we fired the guy.' Communities deserve real answers on who has access, how often it's audited, and what happens when the data leaks out — intentionally or not. Check our camera map to see if Flock is already watching your streets, and visit take-action if you want to push your local council for actual oversight instead of after-the-fact press releases.
