Darth Vader comes out in favor of Flock cameras

Orwell Day · 2 months ago

The short version: A satirist puts Flock Safety's talking points in Darth Vader's mouth, and the joke lands because the Empire-style logic underneath is barely exaggerated.

Our Take

Orwell Day's gag writes itself once you think about it: who better to pitch a network of always-on cameras that track your movements than the galaxy's most famous enforcer of total control? The humor works because it's not that far from the real pitch cities get from Flock Safety reps — safety, convenience, "if you have nothing to hide" — just with better PR and no cape.

That's the uncomfortable part. Strip away the lightsaber and the satire is basically a documentary. Flock's ALPR network already logs plate, location, time, and direction of travel for millions of vehicles a day, stores it, and shares it across agencies with little public oversight. The Empire didn't need the Death Star to watch you — it just needed a camera on every block and a database nobody outside its control could audit.

If the joke made you laugh and then made you uneasy, that's the correct reaction. Check our camera map to see how much of this infrastructure is already in your neighborhood, and visit our take-action page if you'd rather not live under the Empire's surveillance program without a say in it.
