Flock Cameras CUT DOWN, Time To Listen!

Twisted Luck Media · 2 months ago

The short version: Twisted Luck Media frames the growing wave of Flock camera vandalism as a message worth listening to, not just a crime wave worth policing.

Our Take

Credit to Twisted Luck Media for naming what a lot of outlets won't: people are angry enough at being tracked everywhere they drive that they're taking matters into their own hands. We don't endorse property destruction, but we'd be lying if we said the trend surprised us. When communities get these cameras installed without a public vote, without a data policy explainer, and often without even a sign, frustration has to go somewhere.

The deeper point the video gets at is that Flock and the police departments leasing these systems have had years to build trust and mostly haven't bothered. No meaningful audit trails released to the public, no real limits on who gets to query a plate's travel history, no accountability when a camera's footage gets passed along to ICE or an out-of-state agency chasing something that's none of their business. Cutting down a pole doesn't fix any of that, but it's a pretty loud signal that the current approach — install first, explain never — isn't sustainable.

If you want a legal way to push back, start by finding out what's actually watching your street with our camera map, then use our take-action page to push your city council for transparency, retention limits, and a real public comment period before the next camera goes up.
