Assault case solved with the help of Flock Safety technology

Flock · 4 years ago

The short version: Flock's in-house promo video touts one assault case solved in Sacramento while glossing over the thousands of scans on innocent drivers that made it possible.

Our Take

This clip comes straight from Flock Safety's own channel, repackaging a KTXL news segment to make the case that ALPR networks solve crime. Credit where it's due: a win is a win if the facts hold up. But notice what's missing — there's no mention of how many plates were scanned and stored to produce that one lead, who had access to the data, or how long it sat in a database before anyone needed it. That's the pattern with every one of these "solved case" videos: a single success story is used to justify a dragnet that photographs every driver, every day, guilty or not.

Sacramento is one of dozens of cities where Flock has quietly blanketed streets with cameras, and these produced-for-PR clips are the company's preferred way to keep city councils and the public from asking harder questions — like retention periods, audit logs, out-of-state data sharing, or what happens when the system misfires and sends police to the wrong car. A single cleared case doesn't tell you any of that.

If you want the fuller picture of what's actually watching your street, check our camera map and see how close the nearest Flock reader is to your home. Then head to take-action for concrete steps to push your local government for transparency before approving more of this infrastructure.
