Overhead drone mass surveillance

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 2 months ago

The short version: A channel on digital ID and mass surveillance spotlights overhead drones, a reminder that ALPRs are just one layer of a growing aerial-and-ground tracking net.

Our Take

Credit to the creator behind Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency for keeping the lens on something most local news won't touch: the normalization of drones hovering over American neighborhoods. It's easy to think of license plate readers and overhead drones as separate issues, but they're increasingly the same system. Flock Safety and similar vendors are already pitching "Drone as First Responder" programs to police departments, meaning the camera on the pole and the camera in the sky can be fed by the same dispatch trigger and stitched into the same searchable database.

That's the part that should concern anyone who cares about due process, not just privacy hobbyists. A fixed ALPR camera at least has a known location you can map and avoid if you choose. A drone doesn't have that constraint — it can loiter over a protest, a church parking lot, or a private backyard, and the footage can sit in a cloud system indefinitely, often with little public oversight over retention or access. When departments justify these rollouts as "efficiency" tools, they rarely explain who audits the data, who can pull it later, and whether a warrant was ever part of the equation.

We'd rather people see the fuller picture than panic over any single video. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your streets, and if you want to push back on a rollout in your town, our take-action page has concrete steps for showing up at city council and demanding real policy limits before the drones follow the plate readers into permanent deployment.
