Reason Given, Ep. 9: 18,904 Flock devices, 31 days back
The short version: Magnetic Norse's 'Reason Given' series exposes a Lombard, IL police search that swept 18,904 Flock cameras nationwide over a 31-day window.
Our Take
Magnetic Norse keeps doing the unglamorous but essential work of combing through Flock audit logs, and episode 9 is a gut-punch: a single query from Lombard, Illinois police reportedly touched nearly 19,000 ALPR devices across the country and reached back a full month. That's not a local investigation tool anymore — that's a national lookup button, and the "reason given" for wielding it is the only thing standing between routine policing and a de facto surveillance dragnet.
This is the core problem with Flock's network-search design: once an agency is plugged in, geography stops being a meaningful limit. A detective in one Illinois suburb can, with a few clicks, pull a month of movement data from cameras thousands of miles away, often justified with a sentence or two that nobody outside the department scrutinizes unless someone files a records request and does the math, like Magnetic Norse just did.
Multiply this one search by the thousands of agencies now on the network and you get a rolling, searchable record of where millions of ordinary people drove, going back weeks, with essentially no independent oversight. Credit to Magnetic Norse for putting real numbers behind that abstraction.
