ESP32 vs. Surveillance: Your Privacy Toolkit #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 1 week ago

The short version: STS Technologies' short spotlights ESP32-based gadgets like FlockYou, turning cheap hobbyist hardware into tools for spotting and documenting ALPR surveillance.

Our Take

This clip from STS Technologies LLC is a quick hit, but it points at something bigger: the same $10 microcontrollers hobbyists use for home automation are now being repurposed to push back against license plate readers. FlockYou and similar ESP32 projects are part of a growing DIY detection movement — regular people building tools to know when and where they're being scanned, since Flock Safety and its peers certainly aren't going to tell you.

We're always going to be careful about hardware that promises to "beat" a camera network — detection is not evasion, and awareness is not immunity. But normalizing the idea that ALPR infrastructure can and should be observed, logged, and questioned by the public is exactly the cultural shift this fight needs. Every open-source sensor project chips away at the assumption that these cameras get to operate unseen and unchallenged.

Credit to STS Technologies for putting hardware in people's hands instead of just complaining online. If you want to see where this surveillance is actually deployed near you, check our map, and if you're ready to do something about it beyond hardware tinkering, our take-action guide has next steps for pushing back at the city council level.
