Flock LPR Helps Recover Stolen Vehicle in Florida

Flock · 6 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promo video touts a Florida stolen-truck recovery, but a single success story from the company selling the cameras isn't evidence of safe, accountable surveillance.

Our Take

This clip comes straight from Flock Safety's corporate YouTube channel, not an independent newsroom, so take the framing for what it is: a sales reel. A stolen rental truck getting located is a genuinely good outcome for the owner, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. But one cherry-picked win tells us nothing about the thousands of plates scanned, stored, and shared in Okaloosa County that had nothing to do with this case — or where that data ends up afterward.

That's the pattern with these company-produced success stories: they're short on specifics about retention periods, who else can query the database, and whether the agency's use lines up with its own policy. Flock doesn't put out videos about wrongful stops, data breaches, or officers running plates for personal reasons, even though those stories exist too. A recovered truck doesn't require a statewide network quietly logging the movements of every driver who passes a reader.

If you want to know whether Okaloosa County — or your own county — is running this kind of dragnet, check our camera map and see what's actually deployed near you, then use our take-action resources to push for real transparency and limits before the next feel-good ad rolls out.
