Rich People Saying The Wrong Things, Fox News Mask, FLOCK "Safety" | BIAS #15

BIAS Podcast · 4 months ago

The short version: A pop-culture podcast's passing jab at Flock Safety shows ALPR backlash has gone mainstream, even among non-activist audiences.

Our Take

BIAS Podcast built its episode around rich people embarrassing themselves and cable news theatrics, but the fact that Flock Safety earned a slot in that lineup says something. When a show built for laughs and pop-culture snark decides a license-plate surveillance network deserves its own segment, that's a sign the conversation has escaped the narrow circle of privacy wonks and local activists. Credit to the BIAS hosts for putting "Safety" in scare quotes — that's exactly the right instinct.

We don't know the specifics of what they said, and we're not going to put words in their mouths. But the broader point holds regardless of the jokes: Flock's cameras are quietly multiplying in towns that never had a real public debate about them, logging the movements of everyone who drives past whether or not they're suspected of anything. That's the part that doesn't make for great comedy but matters more than any punchline — a private company building a de facto national vehicle-tracking system, one city council vote at a time.

If this video is the first time you're hearing Flock's name, don't stop at the laugh. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your own neighborhood, and head to take action if you want to do more than just shake your head at the TV.
