Flock cameras the rise of mass surveillance

J on X · 4 months ago

The short version: A new video from J on X spotlights how communities nationwide are pushing back on Flock Safety's ALPR network, and that pushback is the real story.

Our Take

Creator J on X (with a hat tip to @JessiCowartTX) is tracking something we've been documenting for a while: the quiet spread of Flock Safety cameras into neighborhoods that never really got a say. The video's framing is right — this isn't a settled issue, it's an active fight, with city councils, county boards, and ordinary residents in the middle of debating, restricting, or outright rejecting these systems once they learn what the cameras actually log and who gets access to that data.

That local friction matters more than any press release from Flock. Mass surveillance infrastructure gets normalized one quiet contract at a time, and the only real check on it is public awareness before the cameras go up, not after. If your town is debating a Flock contract or you want to see what's already been installed near you, check our camera map and bring the receipts to your next council meeting.

Credit to J on X for putting a spotlight on the communities doing this work. If you want to push back where you live, our take-action page has the tools to get started.
