Get the Flock Out of Texas

Texas Civil Rights Project · 1 month ago

The short version: Texas Civil Rights Project calls out Flock cameras for burning taxpayer money on unproven mass surveillance instead of fixing real community problems.

Our Take

The Texas Civil Rights Project's video asks the question that should be at the center of every city council meeting considering a Flock Safety contract: where's the proof? If law enforcement can't produce solid evidence that blanketing a town in license plate readers actually reduces crime, then taxpayers are being asked to fund a surveillance apparatus on faith alone. That's not how public safety spending is supposed to work.

What makes this especially galling is the opportunity cost. Every dollar sunk into camera subscriptions, cloud storage, and data-sharing agreements is a dollar not spent on the things that actually move the needle on community safety — mental health response, housing stability, violence intervention. Instead, departments get a dragnet that logs everyone's movements, flags no one in particular, and quietly builds a searchable history of where you drove, who you visited, and when.

TCRP is right to push back, and Texans don't have to wait for their city council to catch up.
