Mass Surveillance in 2026: Flock is Just the Tip of the Iceberg

Credit to Astra for zooming out. It's easy to fixate on a single Flock pole in your neighborhood, but this breakdown connects the dots between license plate readers, Clearview AI's facial recognition contracts with ICE, and the fact that cops often don't need a warrant to pull data off your phone. That's the point we keep making: Flock isn't an isolated nuisance, it's one node in a network that's being built out fast, with very little public debate about whether any of us actually consented to it.
The Snowden framing matters too. "Permanent Record" was about bulk collection at the federal level, but what's happening now is that same logic — collect everything, sort it later, share it across agencies — getting rebuilt at the local level with private companies as the middlemen. Flock sells itself to small towns as a tool for catching car thieves, then that data ends up flowing into networks other agencies and even ICE can tap. Once the camera's up, you don't get to vote on who gets access next.
