‘Darth Vader’ Makes Surprise Appearance In Support Of Flock Cameras
The short version: Newsweek covers a costumed Darth Vader cheering for Flock cameras at a city council meeting, and the irony writes itself.
Our Take
Credit to Newsweek for capturing the moment: someone in a full Darth Vader costume stood up at a city council meeting to voice support for Flock Safety's ALPR network. It's a viral gag, sure, but it's also an accidental gift to anyone trying to explain what these systems actually are. The guy who chokes subordinates and blows up planets to keep order is now the mascot for "public safety" cameras that log every car that passes, no warrant required. You couldn't script better unintentional messaging if you tried.
Underneath the meme, though, is the same pattern we track in city council chambers across the country: a private company's sales pitch dressed up as a public safety slam dunk, with little discussion of retention periods, data sharing with ICE or out-of-state agencies, or what happens when the system misfires and sends police to the wrong car. Costumes come and go, but the cameras stay bolted to the pole long after the laughs die down.
If your town is debating a Flock contract, don't let a viral clip be the extent of the public record. Check our map to see if ALPRs are already watching your streets, and use our take-action resources to push your council for real answers before they approve the next contract.
