Flock Cameras Exposed: Traffic Tickets, ALPRs, and Vehicle Surveillance

Shared Security Podcast · 2 months ago

The short version: Shared Security Podcast breaks down how a Flock camera image reportedly used for a routine traffic ticket proves 'stolen cars only' promises don't hold up.

Our Take

The Shared Security Podcast crew put their finger on the exact problem we've been hammering on: mission creep isn't a hypothetical, it's the business model. Flock Safety sells these networks to city councils as tools for finding stolen vehicles and missing persons, but once a camera captures every plate that passes by, nothing stops that data from being repurposed for routine traffic enforcement. The 404 Media case they cover — a ticket allegedly generated from a Flock image — is a textbook example of the bait-and-switch that happens after the ribbon-cutting ceremony ends and the marketing brochure goes in the trash.

What we appreciated about this episode is that the hosts didn't just wave their hands at 'privacy concerns' — they dug into retention policies, audit trails, warrant requirements, and the uneven way these rollouts target certain neighborhoods over others. That's the real fight here: not whether ALPRs can theoretically help solve a crime, but whether any community actually has enforceable rules governing who can query the data, for what purpose, and for how long it sits in a database waiting to be misused, subpoenaed, or breached. Vague company policy updates and press statements are not a substitute for binding local law.

If your town has one of these cameras — or is about to get one — you deserve to know before your city council votes on it. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your daily commute, and if you want to push back on an unaccountable rollout in your area, our take-action guide has the tools to start that fight at the local level, where these decisions are actually made.
