Texas mayor talks cancellation of contract for Flock Safety cameras

Will DuPree · 3 weeks ago

The short version: A Texas mayor publicly discusses pulling the plug on a Flock Safety ALPR contract, a rare reversal worth watching closely.

Our Take

Credit to Will DuPree for getting a sitting mayor on camera to talk through why a Flock Safety contract got canceled. Most of these stories play out in budget memos and city council minutes that never see daylight — it's a different thing entirely to hear a local official explain the reasoning in plain language, whatever that reasoning turns out to be.

Contract cancellations like this matter because they puncture the inevitability narrative Flock and its sales reps lean on hard: the idea that once a city signs up, ALPR dashboards just become permanent civic infrastructure. They don't have to. Councils vote these contracts in, and they can vote them back out, especially when elected officials start asking harder questions about cost, efficacy, and what happens to the plate-read data sitting in Flock's servers after the cameras come down.

If you want to know whether your own town has quietly wired itself into this network, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back the way this Texas city apparently did, our take-action page has the tools to start that fight at your next council meeting.
