Scrutiny grows over Flock cameras as Dallas police limit data access | NBCDFW

NBC DFW · 4 weeks ago

The short version: Dallas officials are finally asking who gets to see Flock camera data, and the answers so far haven't been reassuring.

Our Take

Credit to NBC DFW for pressing on a question we've been asking since this site launched: once a Flock camera captures your plate, who actually gets to look at it? Dallas police trimming the list of outside agencies with access is a tacit admission that the original sharing arrangement was too loose — that's not a PR win, it's damage control after the fact.

Notice the framing in this story: a Flock spokesperson touts "successes" while the police department quietly narrows access behind the scenes. That gap between the sales pitch and the operational reality is exactly where accountability goes to die. Vague talk of solved crimes doesn't tell taxpayers how many agencies, task forces, or federal partners were pulling Dallas driving data before anyone in city government thought to check.

Every one of these local fights follows the same arc: cameras go up with little debate, data-sharing agreements balloon quietly, and only after a journalist or city council member asks uncomfortable questions does an agency admit it lost track of its own system. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your routes in Dallas-Fort Worth, and head to take-action if you want to push your own city council to ask the same hard questions before the cameras multiply further.
