Protect Your Mobile Privacy with RayHunter #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 months ago

The short version: STS Technologies LLC spotlights EFF's open-source RayHunter tool for detecting IMSI catchers, a reminder that cell-site simulators and ALPR networks are two sides of the same surveillance coin.

Our Take

STS Technologies LLC's short on RayHunter is a solid nudge toward mobile privacy hygiene, and credit where it's due: EFF built a genuinely useful, open-source tool for flagging the kind of rogue cell towers and IMSI catchers that police and federal agencies have quietly deployed for years without warrants. That it's now sold pre-installed on a dedicated device lowers the barrier for regular people to check whether their phone is talking to something it shouldn't be.

We cover this because cell-site simulators and automated license plate readers are cut from the same cloth — both are dragnet technologies that collect data on everyone to maybe catch someone, and both have historically operated with minimal oversight, disclosure, or consent. If you're worried enough about Stingrays to buy a detector, you should be just as worried about the Flock Safety cameras logging your plate, location, and travel patterns every time you drive past one.

Check our camera map to see what's watching your routes, and hit take action if you want to push back on surveillance infrastructure in your own community.
