That Traffic Light Above You Is Also a License Plate Reader

The Real UnderStory · 3 months ago

The short version: A YouTuber's reminder that ordinary traffic signals can double as plate readers underscores how surveillance hides in plain sight, unannounced and unregulated.

Our Take

The Real UnderStory is making a point we hammer on constantly: you don't need a dedicated Flock pole to be tracked. Plenty of intersection hardware, including gear mounted right alongside traffic signals, can capture and log plates as part of routine traffic management contracts. The camera doesn't need a flashing light or a warning sign. It just needs a lens, a timestamp, and a database somewhere down the line.

What makes this unsettling isn't the existence of cameras at intersections, it's the total lack of public accounting for what they're doing, who's pulling the data, and how long it sits in a server before someone with a badge or a subpoena comes looking. Traffic engineering and policing have quietly merged in a lot of cities, and drivers were never asked whether that was okay. The infrastructure you assume is just managing congestion may also be writing down everywhere you go.

This is exactly why we built the map, because you can't push back on a surveillance network you can't see. If this video gets you looking up at intersections differently, that's the point. Go document what's near you and check out take action for ways to push your city council to answer for it.
