Missing teenage girl found after Flock cameras track former deputy's vehicle

WSMV 4 Nashville · 4 weeks ago

The short version: WSMV reports Flock cameras helped locate a missing Decatur teen in White County, but the case still raises bigger questions about who controls this tracking network.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: WSMV 4 Nashville reports a missing teenager was found safe after Flock camera data helped investigators track a vehicle linked to a former deputy. That's a genuinely good outcome, and nobody at DeFlock The USA is going to pretend otherwise. Reuniting a kid with her family matters.

But "it worked this time" is exactly how these systems get sold to city councils everywhere, and it's exactly why nobody asks the harder follow-up questions. Who approved access to this data? How long was it retained? Was there a warrant, or just a login? A single feel-good case gets used to justify thousands of cameras logging the location of every driver, every day, with no case at all. The same network that found one girl is also quietly building a travel history on everyone else who happened to drive past.

We're not anti-recovery, we're anti-blank-check. Good outcomes don't erase the need for audit trails, retention limits, and public oversight of who's watching the watchers.
