The War on Flock Cameras

Banish Big Brother · 3 months ago

The short version: Banish Big Brother's Zach and Elizabeth survey the growing backlash of Americans torching, sawing down, and smashing Flock ALPR cameras.

Our Take

Credit to Zach and Elizabeth at Banish Big Brother for naming something a lot of outlets won't touch directly: people are angry enough about being tracked everywhere they drive that they're taking matters into their own hands. We don't endorse property destruction, and we're not going to pretend we do for clout, but we understand the rage underneath it. When you install a camera on every other block that logs plates, location, and timestamp for anyone who didn't vote on it, didn't consent to it, and often can't even get a straight answer about who's allowed to query the data, you shouldn't be shocked when some of your neighbors decide the social contract is already broken.

The real story isn't the vandalism, it's why so many people feel like sawing down a pole is the only lever they have left. Flock's network has expanded into thousands of communities with almost no public debate, minimal retention limits, and contracts that often get rubber-stamped by city councils without real scrutiny. That's a governance failure, not a technology success. Anger at the hardware is a symptom; the disease is surveillance infrastructure rolled out faster than democratic oversight can keep up with.

If you want a legal outlet for that frustration, there are better moves than a hacksaw: show up to your city council meeting, file public records requests, and push for an actual policy with audit logs and sunset clauses. Start by checking our camera map to see what's already watching your routes, then use our take-action guide to push back the way that actually sticks.
