Safer Communities | Building Secure Neighborhoods with Flock Safety

Flock · 2 years ago

The short version: Flock's slick self-promo sells 'safer neighborhoods' while glossing over the permanent surveillance net it drapes over every driver, guilty or not.

Our Take

This one's straight from the source: Flock Safety's own marketing team, polishing the pitch they give to HOAs and city councils every day. It's a tidy sales reel — deter theft, catch bad guys, build community — and that's exactly the problem. The video sells outcomes, not mechanics. It never mentions that "helping law enforcement solve crime faster" means scanning and logging the plate of every single car that drives past, whether that driver is a burglar or just someone heading to church.

Notice what's missing: any discussion of data retention windows, who else can query that database, how often these networks get hacked or misused by bored employees, or what happens when a system built to catch porch pirates gets handed to ICE or an out-of-state prosecutor chasing someone for a tracked trip. "Vehicle evidence" sounds neutral until you remember it's a permanent, searchable record of where you drove, built without a warrant, often without your neighborhood ever voting on it.

We're not saying crime isn't real — it is. But normalizing blanket ALPR coverage as simply "community safety" is how mass surveillance infrastructure gets installed with a smile and a stock-photo cul-de-sac. Check our camera map to see how much of this network is already in your area, and if you'd rather your neighborhood not be the next case study, visit our take-action page for how to push back at the city council level.
