ESP32 for Privacy: Detect Surveillance #shorts
The short version: STS Technologies' ESP32-based FlockYou gadget promises to detect nearby ALPR gear, putting a DIY countersurveillance tool in regular people's hands.
Our Take
Credit where it's due: STS Technologies LLC is packaging a real technical idea — using cheap ESP32 microcontrollers to sniff out signals from surveillance hardware — into a consumer product aimed squarely at Flock Safety's ALPR network. Whether or not the FlockYou device lives up to the marketing, the underlying instinct is sound. People are tired of being tracked block by block without consent, and they're starting to build their own tools to fight back instead of waiting for lawmakers to catch up.
We'd caution readers to do their homework before buying any gadget that claims to detect or defeat ALPR cameras. Detection methods vary wildly in reliability, and a short promotional video isn't the same as independent testing. That said, the fact that a hardware company sees enough demand to sell an 'awareness device' says a lot about how normalized plate-reader surveillance has become in American neighborhoods — and how little trust the public has in the companies deploying it.
If you want to know what's actually watching your street, skip the gadgets for a minute and check our camera map to see documented Flock locations near you, then hit take action for ways to push back through your city council, not just your toolbox.
