Misuse of Flock camera leads to IMPD suspension
The short version: An Indianapolis police officer was suspended after FOX59 News uncovered misuse of Flock license plate reader data, proving these systems get abused from the inside.
Our Take
FOX59 News deserves credit for digging into a story that departments would rather bury: an IMPD officer disciplined for misusing Flock camera access. This is the scenario Flock Safety never leads with in its sales pitch — not hackers, not foreign adversaries, but a badge-holder with a login poking around in millions of plate scans for reasons that had nothing to do with an actual investigation.
Every time Flock or a police PR office gets pressed on abuse, the answer is the same: "we have audit logs, we have policy." Great — but policy only matters when someone actually checks the logs, and in this case it took outside reporting to surface the problem. That's not oversight, that's luck. If one officer in one department got caught, the real question is how many searches in how many other agencies never get a second look.
This is exactly why we built the map — so you can see whether a Flock camera is watching your street before you have to wonder if someone is quietly looking up where you've been. If your city or county is running this network, now's a good time to ask who's auditing the auditors.
