They're putting Flock cameras at PLAYGROUNDS. Now we know why.

Parkrose Resistance · 3 weeks ago

The short version: Parkrose Resistance spotlights Flock cameras popping up near playgrounds and schools, raising hard questions about why kid-heavy spaces need license-plate surveillance.

Our Take

Parkrose Resistance is asking the question a lot of parents probably haven't thought to ask: why does a splash pad or an elementary school need a license-plate reader pointed at the parking lot? Credit to the channel for connecting dots between sites that have nothing to do with crime hotspots and everything to do with families just trying to get their kids outside.

This matters because 'public safety' framing tends to expand quietly into 'surveil everywhere people gather,' and playgrounds and schools are about as sympathetic a gathering place as it gets. Once cameras are normalized at a splash pad, there's no principled line left to stop them anywhere — every parking lot becomes a potential data point in a nationwide tracking network, logging who drives where, how often, and with whom, regardless of whether anyone's done anything wrong.

If this kind of placement is happening in your town, it's worth checking whether it's documented and pushing back if it isn't. Take a look at our camera map to see what's already been logged nearby, and hit up our take-action page if you want to push your local council for transparency before more cameras go up where your kids play.
