Smart Parking System with License Plate Recognition
The short version: A vendor's slick promo for automatic-barrier license plate recognition shows how normalized plate scanning has become in ordinary parking lots, not just policing.
Our Take
This clip from Cherry isn't about Flock Safety specifically, it's a manufacturer showing off a barrier gate that reads your plate to let you into a parking lot. That's the point worth sitting with: license plate recognition has quietly become off-the-shelf hardware, sold the same way you'd sell a garage door opener. No warrant, no public meeting, no privacy policy you'll ever see, just a camera bolted to a gate arm logging every car that passes.
The pitch is convenience, and for a single apartment complex or strip mall, maybe that's all it is. But stack thousands of these systems across residential communities, commercial lots, and office parks, and you've got a patchwork surveillance network with zero public accountability, run by whoever bought the hardware and however long they feel like keeping the data. Nobody voted on this. Nobody audits it. It just shows up because a property manager wanted fewer tailgaters at the gate.
We built our map because plate readers like this one rarely announce themselves, they're just there, watching. If you've spotted one in your neighborhood, parking garage, or workplace, help us document it, and check out our take-action page for ways to push back on the normalization of plate tracking everywhere you go.
