ANPR Parking System | Smart License Plate Recognition & Barrier Gate
The short version: A vendor demo from creator Even Li shows how casually plate-reading cameras get bundled into everyday parking gates, normalizing ALPR tech one garage at a time.
Our Take
Even Li's demo video is a straightforward product reel: a camera reads a plate, a gate swings open, smart parking achieved. It's the kind of footage vendors use to sell facilities managers and property owners on "frictionless" access control. Nothing sinister on its face — until you remember that every one of these installs is another node capturing time-stamped vehicle data, often with zero public disclosure about how long that data is kept or who else can query it.
This is exactly how ALPR sprawl happens in the real world. It's rarely a city council vote on mass surveillance — it's a parking garage, an apartment complex, a strip mall, each buying a "smart" camera system for convenience and cost savings. Multiply that by thousands of private lots feeding into systems that can be networked, shared, or sold to police and data brokers, and you get a de facto surveillance net that nobody voted for and most drivers never knew existed.
We cover Flock Safety specifically because it dominates the public-facing, government-funded side of this industry, but demo videos like this are a reminder that the underlying technology is everywhere and getting cheaper and easier to deploy. If you want to see what's already watching your plate, check the map, and if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your own town, see take action.
