Flock Cameras are the Way to Keep Your Farm Safe

Sow the Land · 2 months ago

The short version: A farming channel pitches Flock cameras as rural security, but it glosses over what happens once that plate data leaves the farm gate.

Our Take

The channel Sow the Land makes the case that Flock Safety cameras can help farmers protect equipment, livestock, and property from theft — a real concern in rural areas where response times are long and law enforcement is spread thin. We get the appeal, and we're not going to pretend farm theft isn't a legitimate problem.

But "install a camera to catch a thief" and "feed your neighbors' comings and goings into a nationwide, searchable database" are two very different things, and the video doesn't really grapple with the second part. Flock's pitch to landowners rarely mentions that the footage isn't just yours — it's pooled into a network that police departments, and sometimes federal agencies, can query without a warrant. A camera pointed at your gravel road logs everyone who drives past it, farmhand or not, forever part of a record you don't control.

Rural communities are actually one of Flock's fastest-growing markets precisely because there's less scrutiny out there than in cities with active privacy debates. If you're weighing a camera for your property, or you've noticed one already watching your road, check our map to see what's already been deployed nearby, and visit take action for ways to push back on surveillance creep before it becomes the default for every farm-to-market road in the country.
