Credit to Nick Knoth and David Lile at COMO Vanguard for getting Ward 1 Councilwoman Valerie Carroll on record, but notice where Flock landed in this episode: last, after budget amendments, security perks for council members, and downtown parking logistics. That's how a lot of ALPR rollouts happen in mid-size cities — as a footnote to housekeeping items, not as the standalone civil-liberties debate it deserves to be. If Columbia is heading toward a public hearing on Flock cameras, that hearing needs to be the headline, not an afterthought tacked onto a budget recap.

It's also worth sitting with the juxtaposition here: council members discussing their own security protections in the same breath as a mass camera network meant to watch everyone else's movements. Elected officials get to weigh trade-offs about their personal safety and privacy. Residents whose plates get logged every time they drive past a Flock camera rarely get that same seat at the table. If Columbia's hearing is really coming, locals should show up and ask the basic questions this episode doesn't: who audits the data, how long is it kept, and which agencies get access.
