CATHEXIS Knowledge Session: ANPR Solution

CATHEXIS - Video Management Solutions · 6 years ago

The short version: Cathexis's vendor webinar sells ANPR as a plug-and-play security feature, glossing over the surveillance dragnet these systems create once plates are logged at scale.

Our Take

This one comes from Cathexis, a video management company pitching its automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) module to security integrators and corporate clients. It's a sales webinar, not a journalism piece — the goal is to show installers how easy it is to bolt plate-reading onto existing camera systems and sell it as a "solution." That's exactly the problem: ANPR is being marketed like any other checkbox feature, with little discussion of what happens to the data once every vehicle passing a lot, gate, or road gets logged and timestamped.

Cathexis is one of dozens of vendors in this space, and its pitch mirrors the Flock Safety playbook we track here — frame plate reading as "loss prevention" or "access control," skip the part about indefinite retention, data sharing with law enforcement, or what a breach or subpoena could expose. The more vendors normalize this tech for private campuses, HOAs, and retail lots, the bigger and more invisible the surveillance web gets, often without residents ever being told a camera is watching their comings and goings.

Credit to Cathexis for at least being upfront that this is a commercial pitch — most of the industry hides behind vaguer "public safety" branding. But that transparency is also why it's worth watching critically: this is literally how the sales machine for mass plate surveillance operates behind closed doors. If you want to see how far this has spread in your own area, check our camera map, and if you'd rather push back than just watch it happen, our take-action guide has concrete steps.
