Two Sunday, flock monitoring #compton attend church #anthropology # #flockcameras #unethical

Louis Bela Wolf · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Creator Louis Bela Wolf documents Flock cameras tracking churchgoers in Compton for a second straight Sunday, raising alarms about surveillance of religious life.

Our Take

Credit to Louis Bela Wolf for doing what too few people do: showing up, watching the cameras, and documenting the pattern. A single sighting could be a fluke. Two Sundays in a row pointed at a church parking lot is a pattern, and patterns are exactly what Flock Safety's marketing promises aren't supposed to produce. These systems are sold as tools for chasing stolen cars and Amber Alerts, not for building a log of who parks where before Sunday service.

This is why ALPR networks are such a dangerous fit for American life. A camera doesn't know the difference between a getaway car and a grandmother's sedan. It just logs the plate, the time, and the location, and hands that record to whoever has access to the database. When that database can reconstruct who was at church, which church, and how often, you've built a tool that chills religious practice and association without ever needing a warrant. That's not a hypothetical slippery slope — it's the literal function of the technology once it's pointed at a place of worship.

If you want to know whether this is happening near you, check our camera map to see documented Flock locations in your area, and if you find one aimed at a church, a clinic, or anywhere else people gather to exercise rights that are supposed to be none of the government's business, head to our take-action page and push back.
