Martinsville Police department reducing number of FLOCK cameras

WSLS 10 · 5 months ago

The short version: Martinsville PD is scaling back its Flock Safety camera network, a rare retreat worth watching as a sign public pressure and cost scrutiny can actually work.

Our Take

Credit to WSLS 10 for catching something we don't see often: a police department voluntarily cutting back on Flock Safety cameras instead of expanding them. Most of the stories we cover here involve quiet rollouts, budget line items nobody questioned, and camera counts that only ever go up. Martinsville pulling back, whatever the stated reason, is the exception that proves these systems aren't inevitable.

We don't know yet whether this is about cost, data showing limited investigative value, community pushback, or just a contract renegotiation. But every time a department admits it can live with fewer cameras, it undercuts the industry talking point that more ALPR coverage is always necessary for public safety. That's a crack in the narrative worth highlighting, even if it's a small one.

If you're in Virginia or anywhere else wondering how many of these cameras are watching your own commute, check our camera map to see what's been logged in your area. And if your local council or PD hasn't faced any scrutiny yet, our take-action page has steps for pushing the same kind of reconsideration that apparently happened in Martinsville.
