Flock Cameras. A safety issue?!?!?

4 Guys and a Mike · 1 month ago

The short version: 4 Guys and a Mike riff on whether Flock cameras actually make communities safer, and we think that question deserves way more scrutiny than a casual chat gives it.

Our Take

The guys over at 4 Guys and a Mike are doing what more people should be doing: sitting around and actually asking out loud whether the cameras popping up on every other street corner are doing what they're sold to do. We appreciate any creator willing to poke at the "it's just for safety" pitch that Flock Safety and local police departments lean on so hard, because that framing rarely gets challenged in city council meetings where these contracts actually get approved.

"Safety" is doing a lot of work in that title, and it should. These systems log every plate that passes, build a timeline of where you've been, and hand that data to whoever has access to the network — not just your local PD, but potentially hundreds of other agencies depending on how sharing is configured. That's a real safety issue too: the safety of your movements not being a permanent, searchable record. A casual conversation like this is a good entry point for folks who haven't thought about ALPRs beyond "it catches bad guys," and we're glad it's getting talked about on channels outside the usual privacy-advocate bubble.

If this episode has you wondering whether there's a Flock camera on your own street, check our camera map to see what's already been documented near you, and if you want to push back on a local deployment, our take-action page has the tools to get started.
