What You Need to Know About Axon

ACLU of Colorado · 2 months ago

The short version: ACLU of Colorado warns that cities dumping Flock are quietly handing the same ALPR surveillance job to Axon, proving the fight is about the practice, not the brand.

Our Take

The ACLU of Colorado is flagging something we've been saying for a while: killing a Flock Safety contract doesn't kill the surveillance, it just changes the logo on the camera pole. Axon, the company best known for tasers and body cams, has quietly built out its own ALPR and surveillance stack, and it's more than happy to scoop up cities that think they've solved their privacy problem by firing Flock. Same mass license plate tracking, same data-sharing questions, different vendor invoice.

This is exactly why the fight can't be about brand loyalty to one bad actor. If local officials cancel one contract but sign another without demanding actual guardrails — audit trails, data retention limits, bans on federal and out-of-state data sharing, public reporting — they've accomplished nothing except a press release. Vendor-hopping lets elected officials claim a win while residents remain just as trackable as before.

Credit to ACLU of Colorado for calling this out before it becomes the next quiet rollout. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your streets, and use our take-action resources to push for real policy limits — not just a change in who's selling the surveillance.
