DeFlock Day
The short version: Fools.Errand's "DeFlock Day" spotlights grassroots pushback against Flock Safety cameras, and we're glad more creators are shining a light on it.
Our Take
We don't know every detail of what Fools.Errand covers in "DeFlock Day," but the title alone tells you where this is headed: a growing number of ordinary people are done being quietly cataloged by license plate readers every time they drive to work, church, or a protest. Credit to the creator for putting a name and a date on that frustration and turning it into content other people can share with their neighbors.
That's exactly the kind of grassroots energy this fight needs. Flock Safety and similar ALPR vendors have spread into thousands of towns with little public debate, often sold to city councils as a quiet line item rather than a surveillance expansion. Videos like this one matter because they translate a wonky policy issue — data retention windows, inter-agency sharing agreements, vendor contracts — into something people can actually rally around.
If this video has you wondering whether your own street has already been mapped by one of these cameras, check our camera map to see what's nearby, and head to our take-action page for concrete steps to push back at your next city council meeting.
