BAN ALL NUMBER PLATE CAMERAS NOT JUST FLOCK

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 2 months ago

The short version: A UK/US surveillance-watch channel argues that banning Flock alone misses the point: every license plate camera vendor deserves the same scrutiny.

Our Take

The channel Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency makes a point we've been hammering since day one: Flock Safety is the loudest name in the ALPR business, but it's far from the only one. Motorola's Vigilant Solutions, Rekor, Genetec, and a handful of regional players run the same basic playbook — scan every plate, log every movement, store it in a database that cops and sometimes private companies can query without a warrant. If a city council bans Flock and quietly signs with a competitor the next budget cycle, nothing has actually changed for the people being tracked.

This is exactly why we built our camera map to document hardware regardless of brand. The fight isn't against one corporate logo on a pole, it's against the entire architecture of dragnet surveillance that treats every driver as a suspect by default. Narrow, vendor-specific bans are easy applause lines for politicians who want to look responsive without touching the underlying legal gap that lets any company sell this capability to any police department with a purchase order.

Credit to the creator for widening the lens here. If you want that broader fight to actually go somewhere in your own town, start with our take-action page — the goal should be rules that cover plate-reading tech as a category, not a single brand.
