Federal Age Verification Laws Create a Digital Surveillance State

Verified Privacy VPN (vp.net) · 7 months ago

The short version: Verified Privacy VPN breaks down how federal age-verification mandates could force Americans to hand over IDs and biometrics just to use an app, building yet another surveillance honeypot.

Our Take

Credit to Verified Privacy VPN for laying out what's actually in these age-verification mandates — because "child safety" is quickly becoming the all-purpose justification for building infrastructure that tracks everyone, not just minors. We've watched this exact playbook before: a sympathetic goal gets used to normalize mass data collection, and once the database exists, mission creep is inevitable. Flock Safety sold ALPR cameras to small towns as a tool to find stolen cars and missing kids. Now those same camera networks are used by ICE, out-of-state prosecutors, and police departments with zero oversight, logging the movements of millions of people who've never been suspected of anything.

The pattern the video describes — biometric data, SSNs, and ID scans pooled into centralized systems — is the same failure mode we track with license plate readers. Any database that stores sensitive identifiers on ordinary people is a target, whether it's for hackers abroad or for agencies here at home who decide the data is useful for something it was never intended for. "Trust us, it's just for safety" rarely survives contact with how these systems are actually used once they're built.

If you want to see what unchecked surveillance infrastructure looks like once it's deployed at scale, check out our ALPR camera map and then head to our take-action page to push back on these systems before they become permanent.
