Flock is Catching Smoke from Both Sides of the Aisle

Fight for the Future · 4 weeks ago

The short version: Fight for the Future highlights how Flock's ALPR network is drawing bipartisan backlash, proving mass surveillance isn't a left-or-right issue—it's a civil liberties one.

Our Take

Credit to Fight for the Future for pointing out something we've been saying since day one: opposition to Flock Safety isn't confined to one side of the political spectrum. When libertarians worried about government overreach and progressives worried about policing abuses both end up in the same room complaining about the same cameras, that's a signal worth paying attention to. Flock's CEO can repeat 'needed to fight crime' as many times as he wants, but that talking point doesn't answer the harder question of who gets access to location data on every car that passes a reader, for how long, and under what oversight.

That's the real story here. ALPR networks don't ask what side of the aisle you're on before logging your plate, your timestamp, and your travel patterns. Once that data exists, it gets shared across agencies, sold to third parties, or handed to federal immigration and law enforcement partners with little transparency and even less public consent. Bipartisan discomfort with that reality isn't a messaging win for either party, it's a warning sign for everyone.

If a video like this makes you wonder whether one of these cameras is already clocking your daily commute, check our map to see what's been documented near you, and head to our take-action page if you want to push back on the deployment happening in your own community.
